A hand-timed 40 is about a quarter-second fast

It is not the timer's fault. Reaction time at both ends of a stopwatch is bigger than most of the improvement anyone is trying to measure, and the research has been consistent about the size of it for fifteen years.

What the research says

Two peer-reviewed studies measured the same thing: college football players running the 40-yard dash, hand-timed and electronically timed at once.

High school track does not treat this as an open question either. The NFHS publishes an official conversion for turning a manual time into a fully automatic one: add 0.24 seconds.

Against what you are trying to measure

Mann's paper puts the smallest worthwhile difference in an electronically timed 40 at about 0.12 s. The timing error is roughly twice the improvement you are looking for. A kid can genuinely get faster and a stopwatch will not reliably show it.

Why a thumb cannot do better

A stopwatch is started by a person reacting to a movement and stopped by a person reacting to another movement. Human reaction to a visual cue runs roughly 0.15 to 0.25 s. At the start the timer anticipates, so the clock starts late; at the finish they react, so it stops late too, but the two errors do not cancel. Anticipation at the start is larger and more consistent, which is why hand times come out fast rather than merely noisy.

This is also why hand times are not comparable between people. The same runner, timed by two coaches, can post two different numbers, and neither is wrong in any way you can settle by arguing.

What actually fixes it

Timing gates

A pair of laser or infrared gates removes the human from both ends. This is what the NFL Scouting Combine uses, and it is the right answer if you have the budget. A one-gate Dashr system starts at $375, Zybek's PowerDash at $649, Brower's Black Box at $798. Full price comparison here.

A camera

A high frame rate camera fixes the finish for free, because a recorded frame is evidence rather than a reaction. At 240 frames per second each frame lasts 0.004 seconds, so the crossing frame is not in dispute. The catch has always been the work: most camera timing apps still make you scroll through footage and mark the frames yourself, and most need a second device or a cable to handle the start.

How Clocker does it

One iPhone films at 240 fps. The clock starts when the starter's hand covers and uncovers the lens, and stops when the runner crosses the line you pointed at. Both are found automatically, from the recording, with no second device and no scrolling. Every time comes with the frames either side of the mark, so you can see the crossing rather than take the number on faith.

What this does not fix

A phone is not a certified timing system and Clocker is not one either. Do not use it for official results, records, or qualification. What it replaces is the stopwatch in your hand at Tuesday practice, and that is a low bar to clear by a quarter of a second.
